A good navigation is important, having a good navigation menu means a lot. It makes it easier for your visitors to navigate through out your whole site. It also helps your SEO. Its priority should be higher than any other element on a site.
Never use a Flash based navigation menu, it’s bad for SEO and sometimes irritating for us visitors. And no its not cool having an animated flash navigation menu on your site. All a user wants is to be able to navigate through out your site easily. They don’t have all the time in the world to just to find your About Me page, remember the interwebz is huge. They can easily find another site supplying the same content with a simple search.
Put the important links beneath the header or maybe above it. Never, I mean never have your navigation right at the bottom of your page or at the footer unless those link are less focused on. You can’t expect a user to scroll all the way down just to look for a page.
Also try not to use graphics to represent the text on your navigation menu, as I stated earlier its bad for SEO. What happens when that image doesn’t load? Its way better to use a text based navigation. Or maybe consider using @font-face. Finally try not to clutter your navigation menu with a whole bunch of other unimportant links, think of a drop down or something more relevant.
Final Thoughts
Or as I like to say, keep it simple. I feel that I have a proper navigation menu. I’ve placed all the pages beneath the header on the left-hand side and the categories drop down on the right-hand side. I’ve placed a few links down at the footer, but those are just credits and to log in which isn’t really important to readers.
Its just my point of view on how important navigation is to a user like me.
